With the new academic year around the corner, Words Matter has launched a new resource designed to help parents and carers support children as they face key school transitions – whether starting nursery, moving to a new class, or taking the leap into secondary school.
Developed in collaboration with child and adolescent mental health expert Dr. Fiona Pienaar and Senior Clinical Advisor of MHI/Shout, the guide offers practical advice on how to talk to children in ways that build confidence and emotional security. It includes helpful dos and don’ts, useful phrases, and tips on routines and emotional support to help children manage change and thrive.
Jessica Bondy, Founder of Words Matter, says:
“School transitions can feel exciting but also daunting and unsettling for children. The way adults speak to them during these moments can shape how secure, confident and capable they feel. This guide is about helping adults use their words with care – because thoughtful, supportive conversations can make all the difference in how a child copes with change and grows through it.”
The resource is free to access and aims to ensure all children feel supported, understood, and empowered at these important milestones.
